  • When is the follow-up appointment?

Ask about the pain

  • What pain/discomfort to expect during the procedure and during recovery?
  • What types of pain-killers and aftercare products are recommended, if any?

Questions about recovery

  • What are the aftercare instructions to follow, what activities to avoid and for how long?

Our guide to finding the right practitioner for you

When choosing a cosmetic practitioner to perform any type of medical procedure, such as wrinkle relaxing injections or lip fillers, it’s important to know what to look for. Most injectable treatments should only be performed by medically qualified practitioners. For the best results, use our guide to find the right practitioner for you.

What qualifications to look for

For injectables and fillers, look for a medically-led clinic. The only practitioners qualified to prescribe and administer these types of treatments are independent nurse prescribers, doctors or dentists registered with Nursing and Midwifery Council, the General Medical Council or General Dental Council.  Check memberships on websites.

Reviews and testimonials

When possible, it is advised to get recommendations from friends/family, otherwise look for reviews on Facebook, Google places and on the clinic’s website. Most practitioners will be able to show before and after pictures from the product’s supplier, however patient confidentiality may restrict the use of previous clients’ images.

Initial consultations

The practitioner should offer a consultation at least two weeks prior to any procedure. During this session, you should not feel any pressure to go ahead with the procedure. Always be sure to give your complete medical history, including cold sores, to avoid any side effects of treatment. Remember to ask your practitioner about insurance coverage and their experience in administering the procedure. Be wary of special offers, as the results of any treatment will differ depending on the practitioner’s expertise. The cheapest price doesn’t always mean the best results.

Up-to-date training

The medical cosmetics industry is rapidly advancing. Choose a practitioner who has relevant training and regularly attends training updates and conferences.
