Detox Your Skin for the New Year in 4 Easy Steps

After festive celebrations and some over indulgence, January and February is a great time for a skin detox. The remaining winter months are a good opportunity to book those treatments that require some down-time, extra UV protection and aftercare. Here are our 4 go-to treatments and products for a clean start.

Chemical Peels

With the social events of Christmas and New Year behind us, use the months ahead to detox your skin with a medium depth chemical peel. Taking advantage of the reduced sunlight hours, February can be the best month for these types of treatments. The recovery time of a medium depth peel includes a few days of redness, followed by up to two weeks of light skin shedding.

A medium depth peel is a great way to detox skin. A peel uses a chemical exfoliant to cause controlled damage of the epidermis and papillary dermis (top layer of skin). The natural healing process then causes regenerative changes that restore the skin’s tone and texture. The medium depth peel offers more dramatic results than the superficial peel, including smoothing, eliminating fine wrinkles, correcting superficial discolouration and enhancing skin vitality.

Despite the drop in temperature, the sun’s UVA wrinkle-causing rays can be just as damaging in winter. During your skin detox, it’s important to use SPF products, being especially vigilant after treatments like chemical skin peels and derma roller sessions. Sunscreen is also essential all year round, so don’t forget to pack it for your winter holidays to the snow, where UVA rays can be harsher than a summer’s day at the beach. So don’t forget to stock up on your favourite SPF product for winter – we recommend Heliocare and Neostrata Sheer Physical Defence, both SPF 50 for advanced protection from UVA and UVB rays.

Light therapy

Omnilux light therapy can soften wrinkles, reduce pore size and improve skin elasticity. The totally painless treatment uses LED light to stimulate the natural functions of your skin cells without causing damage. Light therapy can also be used to enhance the effectiveness of other treatments, such as chemical peels and microdermabrasion, and can work to help treat acne and scarring.  Other effects include regenerating collagen, stimulating circulation and increasing serotonin levels that promote well-being for a feel-good start to your year.

Dry indoor air and harsh winds during the winter months can often leave skin feeling tired and dehydrated. Exfoliating dry skin and using Environ hydrating oil capsules can help brighten dull winter skin. Drinking plenty of water is also an essential way to hydrate skin and flush out toxins for a clearer complexion.

To get a glowing complexion throughout the year, book a consultation to discuss your skincare needs and find the right treatments for you.
